We’ve been hyperfixating on Winx Club and decided to coin some genders related to it! Definition for winxgendix is just “a gender related to Winx Club”, and the character genders are just “a gender related to [character]”

We used the suffix “gendix” rather than “gender” here to differentiate from other possible genders with the same names, and to reference the names of the transformations. If there’s any interest in us coining genders for the Trix, the Specialists, etc, we can!

Credit for the individual wing transparents goes to AstralBlu on Deviantart, symbol on the winxgendix flag is by us.

☔️ Leaf Themed Genderqueer Flag + Gifs 🍃

If you’re genderqueer, questioning, or relate in anyway to queer identity, this is for you. If you’re going through a rough patch right now, or if you could really use a break, take a deep breath.

Listen to the sound of the rain and remember that this feeling of hopelessness is not permanent. Like those grey clouds, the loneliness will leave and the sun will shine again. You will survive this storm.

Listen to the sound of the wind and remember that there are people who care about you. Feel that light breeze ruffle through your leaves, encouraging you to keep going and stand tall. A friendly jab at your shoulder to praise you for staying so strong. You provide for the woods in one way or another, and without you, the forest wouldn’t be the same for someone. Maybe you protect a mother bird and her nest from danger, or maybe you provide a home for a family of squirrels. Maybe your branches used to carry a swing for a small child. Maybe your leaves block out the sun, giving shade perfect for a small picnic. Maybe your trunk is a shoulder for someone to lean on. There’s a million other trees in this forest, but maybe you are a landmark for someone. A way to get home when they’re lost. A familiar face along the street. Life wouldn’t be the same without you and you are so much more stronger than you realize.

Genderqueer: “An umbrella term with a similar meaning to non-binary. It can be used to describe binary cisgender and transgender people within the LGBT+ community who feel that they have a queer or non-normative experience with their gender. It can also be used to describe any gender identities other than man and woman, thus outside of the gender binary.”

  • Straight women who are either WSW or WDW (Women who have sex with women, and women who date women)
  • Turians who are either MSW or MDW (Men who have sex with women, and men who date women)

Xenomni

Coined by me 3/18/2021

Definition: Xenomni refers to someone who is omnisexual and/or omniromantic and xenogender, with a preference for other xenogender individuals.

Xenomni is a mixture of the omni flag (Left) and xenogender flag (Right)

Omni definition:

  • Attraction to all genders, while still having a preference. It’s in-between the terms bisexual/biromantic and pansexual/panromantic.

Xenogender definition:

  • A gender outside of the gender binary, and related to concepts typically not associated with gender itself. For example, a gender related to yellow is yellowgender: that is a form of xenogender. It is a combination of the words “xeno” (alien) + gender.

gender-archival:

Molebug was coined by Tumblr user leatherrot on January 20, 2020.

Molebug is described as “An term representing the opposite of gender, identifying with unreality and dissoconnection from humanity, and an attachment to an alien-like sense of self. Can be described as surreal, intense, and dreamlike.”

Trans Love Is Powerful! 🏳️‍⚧️🌸⚧💕

I am at the end of my first semester of linguistics, and I love it. One of the things we learned was that pronouns are a closed category of words, but I see a lot of people trying to use new pronouns instead of he/she/they. Is this a futile mission of theirs or are pronouns not as closed as I learned or what?

fuckyeahsingularthey:

allthingslinguistic:

tropesarenotbad:

allthingslinguistic:

zombiekittensandmadscientists:

pumpkinskull:

allthingslinguistic:

It’s complicated. Closed and open are the standard terms, but they’re a simplification: a more precise description might be “classes of words that often accept new members” and “classes of words that accept new members only rarely”.

So nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. are open (classes of words that often accept new members) because we’re creating new nouns and verbs all the time and no one bats an eye. In fact, I can make one right now – let’s say it’s chocopocalypse, which is what’ll happen if the world runs out of chocolate – and it wouldn’t take much to start people using it.

Saying that pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, determiners, etc. are closed does reflect a real difference between them and the nouns/verbs/etc, because it’s certainly harder to add new ones. But in fact, there are occasionally new members of these classes, and it’s really neat when that happens because it’s just so rare. (No but seriously, the linguists at the Word of the Year vote the year that “slash” was entered as a new conjunction were so excited.)

But historically, all of the “closed” words have changed at some point, because we’re not all still speaking Proto-World except for the nouns and verbs. In pronouns, for example, we used to have thou/thee and you/ye, and now we only have you (but we’re developing y’all and you guys). They and she are also relative newcomers to English, entering around the 12th-14th centuries: all the third-person pronouns used to begin with a sometimes-dropped h, which is why we have her and ‘em (we’ve reanalyzed ‘em as short for them, but it’s actually a relict of the older form). Oh, and it also used to be hit. But these changes tend to take a couple hundred years to fully stick for closed classes, while they can happen in a few months or years for open ones. (Think of how long it took for blog or google to become a verb. A year, maybe?)

So what does that mean for gender-neutral third-singular pronouns? Well, they has been used as singular since Chaucer, but primarily in nonspecific contexts (”someone left their book”) so adapting it to specific ones (”Alex left their book”) is a bit of an extension but not a huge one. And historical trends suggest that new function words are more likely to arise from adaptations of existing words than from entirely new constructions. So if I were going to bet, I definitely think that singular they (in both specific and nonspecific versions) has a very good chance of long-term success. Popularity-wise, I have the impression that they is also the most common of the nonbinary pronouns, perhaps for that reason.

The more novel ones like xie/hir or ey/em? It depends. There are a few speech communities where a particular gender-neutral pronoun was used a lot, and people did pick them up. (Spivak pronouns, for example, caught on in LambdaMOO.) But I’m not aware of how it’s gone for any speech community that has tried to have multiple gender-neutral third singular pronouns at the same time. I suspect that’s more difficult, but I don’t really know whether it’s impossible. No one knows. We haven’t really tried it yet, at least not on a timescale of decades and centuries. Maybe kids that get exposed to lots of different pronouns at a young age will even treat them as an open class. (That would make for some seriously excited linguists let me tell you.) Or maybe people will end up just converging on singular specific they instead.

But anyway, the difference between closed and open classes is why we can start casually using selfie or heteronormativity in a day or two, but we can take much longer to get fully automatic at ze or singular specific they, even when trying our hardest. I’m in favour of respecting people’s pronouns, but I do find that it takes an extra half-second of thinking to say the ones I’m not used to. But because I know I’m fighting a natural tendency, the fact that it takes more practice than learning a new noun isn’t something I stress myself over – in fact, I think of it as an interesting mental exercise, like practising a new language. (This type of additional conscious control is probably related to the link between language learning and executive functioning.)

More generally, I think it’s useful to recognize that learning to use a pronoun you’ve never encountered before is just not as easy as learning, say, a person’s name that’s equally unfamiliar. And we don’t do anyone any favours by pretending everyone else finds it easy and leading people to conclude that because they find it difficult that there’s something wrong with them or it’s not worth doing. People who say “but they is singular”, for example, are wrong in the details (they has long been used in the singular) but right in the vague sense of unease (they has not historically been used for specific, singular referents). It’s just that this discomfort is, from what I’ve been told, far milder and more temporary than the feeling of being misgendered, so it’s a question of what you want to prioritize. It’s a pity we won’t be around in a couple hundred years to see how it’s turned out, but until then, well, language is an open-source project, and we won’t know which parts are hackable unless we try.

(Relevant links: Practice with pronouns, A non-binary person’s guide to invented pronouns.)

i’m glad this post brings up that “she” was not a “natural” pronoun either. bc yeah. pronouns change over time and we make new ones. it’s ok.

Also, pronouns as a (semi-)open class is not unheard-of.  Pronouns are a somewhat open category in Japanese, for example.  Indeed, the line between pronoun and noun is somewhat fuzzy in Japanese, with ordinary nouns (especially names and titles) often used in a pronoun-like usage, and none of the common pronouns are more than a few centuries old, having originated as nouns used in a pronominal function.  While, conversely, verbs are a closed class in Japanese, with the generic verb suru used for borrowed words

That’s a great point about Japanese! There are several languages that do most (perhaps all?) of their verbing using light verbs, which are typically a closed class. Persian, I think, is another example. English also has a closed class of light verbs, including do, put, set, although they’re not the only kind we have. (Note that the Wikipedia article about light verbs that I’m linking to is very scarce on details for languages that aren’t English – anyone want to improve the “other languages” section with some sources?)

I take a slightly different view of this, mostly because I’m not fond of establishments.

For me the fact pronouns are called a closed category is more of a reflection on class structure and trans erasure in English. My linguistics prof did research into this, and her conclusion was pronouns had an unheard of amount of movement in them. “Thon” was in use as a singular gender neutral pronoun for nearly a century, only written out of dictionaries in the 60s. Then there’s “ou”, an old gender neutral singular pronoun, plus spivak and ze/hir… it does a certain amount of pointing to rigidly imposing a gender binary where such a rigid distinction doesn’t need to exist..

Which I find evident by people who are in the trans community. After a few years of being around people who use a bunch of different pronouns and surrounded by people who make new pronouns/use non normative ones, pronouns don’t feel like a closed category. They feel like an open category. While it’s a tad awkward, it’s not this totally alien thing. Honestly I get more worried about what other people’ll think about my ease of using them than what’s the right pronoun to use, by this point.

2 cents as somebody trans with a touch of linguistics education.

That’s a really interesting addition, thanks! Looks like I should revise upwards my estimate of the probability that pronouns can become an open class in English, since my previous estimate was based on me not speaking Japanese and having a speech community with only a few people who use non-normative pronouns. So perhaps it could happen in general within a few years of exposure, not wait until a subsequent generation like I said before.

(I really hope there’s a linguist or several who’s part of a speech community that uses a lot of new pronouns and is studying this. Not the kind of research you’d want to have an outsider do, but pronouns as a case of porosity between open and closed classes would be really interesting as a syntax, typology, psycholinguistics and/or sociolinguistics topic.)

Also remember that languages without grammatical gender (ie, a whole lot) the gendering of pronouns is much more loose. (English is extremely rare in having gendered pronouns without gendered nouns, right?) And in some languages pronouns are definitely an open class. Thai, for instance- nicknames can be pronouns. That is kind of the situation individualized non-gendered pronouns, like xe/ze/etc would be approaching– it’s absolutely possible for languages to handle that.

That acknowledged, I’m on Team Singular They. I’m rather confused why people think we need new gender neutral pronouns when we already have one. It smacks of a clinging to arbitrary authority you think genderqueer people would have abandoned. (And for clarification Tropesarenotbad is talking largely about the genderqueer community (or historical usages?); binary trans people nowadays just use the appropriate gendered pronouns)

IZgenders part 1

So I saw that there was such thing as Zimgender, a gender related to Zim, but I personally don’t like the flag so I redesigned it. Heh, yeaaaahhhh so I actually made flags for majority of the Invader Zim (IZ) characters.

IZgender is an umbrella term coined by me 3/21/2021 that encompasses any gender related to the show / movie Invader Zim. Mostly kingenders, although anyone can identify as these for a plethora of reasons, like maybe having a hyperfixation or something 😀

Zimgender (redesign)

Romantic love is criticized by many non-monogamous activists/feminists, drawing it with social constructs: patriarchy, sexism, neoliberalism, imperialism, colonialism, body normativity, sex-normativity (sexo-normatividade), obscurantism (implicitism), misogyny, monogamism… Within amato-normativity. But you can still unleash yourself from those oppressive concepts and live a romantic love, as it’s also self-interpretative.

Hi! I’m a demian ply gay and I realized that all of the ply gay flags were kinda… bad, so I made my own!

The first flag is a recolor of the ply flag since the original is too bright for me! This flag is also inherently inclusive of all kinds of ply people! If you’re thinking of a ply person, they’re included under this flag if they want to be!

The next flag is my version of the ply gay flag!

And the final flag is the demian ply gay flag! If you want a version that’s just for demisexuals or demiromantics, I recommend that you add a purple or green stripe continuing from the ply gay flag through the black triangle, since that’s what I think would look best. If anyone makes these, please tag me!

Definitions
-ply: shorthand for polysexual/polyromantic, attraction to some but not all genders
-gay: attraction to genders that are the same as and/or similar to your own
-ply gay: someone whose experience with their orientation matches both the labels of ply and gay for one reason or another
-demian: demisexual and demiromantic, attraction only occurs after an emotional bond is formed

Oh yeah, it also glows in the dark:

whats platonic attraction to you?

Thank you for this ask.

It’s a form of idealistic affection. I can use it as a general blanket term for immaterial desire. Like you don’t need to materialize that, it can occur on your own head.

To platonize is to idealize love, for me, an intangible/unachievable amato-relationship that’s unrelated to the concept of partnering (enamorment).

While this isn’t an amato-attraction (tied to amorous love), because quasiplatonic attraction already exists for that.

Now this is what I ratiocinate from what platonicity means. It carries linguistic relativity, because where I live people use it to talk about lithromantic crushes (they don’t want them to reciprocate), also known as paixonites (passionites‽).

I experienced/had gone through some cogitariromantic sensations in the past, so I can think many platoniromantic, idemromantic and quoiromantic people use this way to express their form of attraction.

Platonic love had to do with the divine Eros. Which could mislead us to see platonic as a nonromantic nonsexual thing. But allosexual people can be aplatonic. See queerotic.

Now, to materialize platonism, would friendship be a good example? For me, as it could be an impersonal feeling in interpersonal activity, fellowship/comradeship are good alternatives. Companionship isn’t required.

Now you enter the amical territory. The amiability, amication and amicability are performative. You can want a platonic commitment, but then it would stop being platonic to be socially recognized/formed, initiating astral ties aurically energized.

Symbiotic friendships or amical relations could deeply evolve to siblingly/germanal/hermanal status (non consanguineous) without amorous involvement. So it’s almost likely a chosen family (cohabitating or not).

Both social and amical subjects conflate with platonic semiotics.

Anyone can have a xenogender/xenic/xenine identity.

There are binary people that are xeno-aligned

There are cis individuals with a xenogender

There are neurotypical xenogender folks

Xenine queern’t transn’t people

Infinite possibilities. Just as genderqueer, it’s a broad term. Try unlearning stereotypes and welcoming “exceptions”.

And there are neurogender people who are also binary and/or cisgender. Despite what tweeters say.

You may say that they are defined as nonbinary genders, but a prescriptivist ignores polysemy and neosemy. So we are here, expanding our language regardless what the cistem wants us to be.

I have spaghetti for brains and have no idea what you mean by the dimorphism in humans post, could you further explain?

Sexual dimorphism refers to the systematic differentiation in phenotypic sex traits/characteristics beyond sex organs between between the observable sexes of the same physical/material species.

In humans, it’s theorized that we are sexually dimorphic, as in, a bimodal spectrum. Categorizing these could lead us to dualistic/dyadicized binarizations (male vs female, Wollfian vs Müllerian) that are sociopolitically rooted in gendered bioessentialism and neurosexism, except for genitogonadal categories (testicular vs ovarian, penoscrotal vs vulvovaginal) that are still binarized and ungendered.

When perisex people try to affirm that sex is not binary/dyadic, they often tokenize intersex bodily variations. We can recognize that the biopsychosocial sense of sex has many attributions on what it’s considered sex, including anatomical, immaterial and mental (neuropsychological) aspects like skeletal, weight, statural, nerve/neural/neuronal, mind and spiritual, derived from a lot of concepts unlimited to gametes and chromosomes.

So that, altersex and transsex people also have say on that, just as any other sex-variant (varsex/parsex). We can’t pretend manicomial cissexists/exorsexists/dyadists are trying to spread hate through their “sex is real” as if that’s the most irrefutable truth-telling materialism.

Creating neologisms is a way of scaping these biased polarized notions, in attempt to debinarize our infrasexist cisnormative society. Existence is semiotic.

What Kind Of Attraction? A History Of The Split Attraction Model

historicallyace:

nextstepcake:

historicallyace:

The split attraction model, or SAM, has been viciously attacked over the course of the past couple years, based on claims that it is homophobic, sexualizing, etc. In order to understand where these claims break down, it’s important to consider the history of split attraction as a model for orientation.

Disjunctive Identities: The Original SAM

Long before the split attraction model was conceived, before even the popularization of gay and lesbian as identity words, there was Karl Heinrich Ulrichs. By 1879, Ulrichs had published twelve books on the subject of non-heterosexual attraction. Though the language he used is not modern sexuality language, the various classifications of orientations that he eventually came up with are fairly similar to modern LGB+ identities, with some exceptions.

Most notable among those exceptions (at least for the purposes of this post) is the fact that he identified two distinct categories of people who would today be considered bisexual (which he then called uranodioning in men and uranodioningin in women): konjunktiver and disjunktiver. (In English, conjunctive and disjunctive bisexuality.) The first described a person with both “tender” and “passionate” feelings for both men and women. The second, however, described a person who had “tender” feelings for men, but “passionate” feelings for women (if the person was a man – the inverse if the person was a woman).

Though Ulrichs’s model was never widely popularized, due to its complexity (he also recognized “man who has sex with men in prison but is otherwise straight” and “man who has been through conversion therapy” as distinct sexualities, among others), it remains the first historical model of orientation to account for split attraction.

Limerance: Separating Love From Sex

The next instance of a model accounting for split attraction was published almost exactly a century after Ulrichs’s works. Psychologist Dorothy Tennov’s studies of attraction and love in the 1960′s led to the publication of her book “Love and Limerence: The Experience of Being in Love” in 1979.

Limerance encompassed what would now be termed a crush, or infatuation with someone – the kind of attraction that would lead to the formation of a relationship, and which could lead to a longer-term, stable experience of love. Although Tennov viewed limerance as essentially including sexual attraction, she acknowledged that sex was not the focus of limerant attraction.

In and of itself, therefore, limerance would not be considered a split attraction model. However, it is worth mentioning because of later use of “non-limerant” as a precursor to today’s “aromantic.”

Affectional Attraction: The First Modern SAM

It is unclear when, precisely, the term “affectional orientation/attraction” first came into popular use. I have seen its coining attributed to Curt Pavola, a gay rights activist from Washington, and to Lisa Diamond, a psychologist. However, the term seems to predate both of these individuals, with the earliest use I can find being from a 1989 paper on education about gay and lesbian identities, wherein the authors use affectional attraction as a term which they do not feel the need to define, indicating to me that its origin must be earlier than that.

Affectional attraction/orientation was used, as a term, to indicate that simply using sexual attraction/orientation was reductive – that it implied that a relationship or feeling of attraction was entirely or mostly about sex. A large body of writing about orientation from the 90′s and early 2000′s uses “affectional/sexual orientation” or similar phrasing for exactly this reason.

Haven For The Human Amoeba: Today’s Split Attraction

Finally, we trace split attraction to a form that is familiar to all of us today.

An attempt on AVEN to trace the origins of romantic orientations as we know them leads to the Yahoo email group Haven For The Human Amoeba (the name of which was derived from the article “My Life As A Human Amoeba”). In that group, in 2001, there were a series of posts about the term "hetero-asexual”.

The idea of split attraction as used today, however, was developed about four years later, in 2005, on AVEN. Terms were hashed out, and the structure of the language that we use today was born. By 2007, the modern language of split attraction was in common use in asexual circles, and was also tentatively suggested to non-asexual people who were questioning their identities.

Conclusions

What can we conclude from this information? I would summarize what I’ve found with the following points:

1) That split attraction, or the potential for split attraction, is not a modern concept, but has been something we have been aware of for centuries.

2) That split attraction is not an exclusively asexual concept, but up until very recently was an integral part of orientation studies in general.

3) That the modern language of split attraction originated within the asexual community.

4) That anyone who blames asexual people for any perceived horribleness of the split-attraction model is flat wrong.

Further Reading & Sources

On Ulrichs’s Uranian model of orientation: one, two, three, four, five

On Limerence: one, two, three

On Affectional Attraction: one, two, three

On The Modern SAM: one, two, three

I know of an earlier example! In 1977, Shively and De Cecco propose a model of sexual orientation that is split into “physical” and “affectional” aspects in their paper “Components of Sexual Identity” – I’ve pulled out the relevant excerpts here: https://nextstepcake.wordpress.com/2016/10/24/models-of-sexuality-in-shively-and-de-ceccos-components-of-sexual-identity-1977/

I don’t know if this is the first – they propose their specific model as if it is the formal model to include this split aspect, but they discuss the concept having separate “physical” and “affectional” in a way that suggests that the concepts have been around previously, if not in a formalized way. Combing through the bibliography here may be an interesting endeavor for someone with more time than me.

Ahh, bless you. Papers that actually include bibliographies are my lifeblood.

So based on this info, I did some more digging. What I’m finding is that prior to about 1977, affectional was used exclusively to describe a platonic or familial emotional connection. (Examples: one, two, three) I would theorize based on this that the paper you found is the first to put the pre-existing term into a model of human sexuality.

Some evolution about these (a brief in LatAm context): the asexual community in Brazil has various affectional suffixed orientations to replace romantic ones, known as -afetive(a/o), such as heteroafetive, androafetive/gineafetive, homoafetive, biafetive, panafetive, lesboafetive/lesbiafetive, oniafetive/omniafetive and poliafetive (could be either ply (polysexual, polyromantic…) or polyaffective/polyaffectionate/polyamorous). It’s usually affinitive but could be amative (demiafetive) and nullitive (nulafetive/nonafetive).

All this results from our juridical word homoafetividade, firstly used in recognition of foresight for homoaffectional civil unions, used at least since 2006.

Nowadays it’s used to include equaric relationships (sapphic/vincian/enbian/etc.). There’s an NGO that uses transafetiva to connote trans partnership(s), similar to transamorous. This can cause erasure and is criticized by trans/bi activists.

Recently, feminists use homoafetiva to talk about homosociality and homoeroticism in heterosexual men. Which banalized the word into homoplatonic.

I recommend taking care translating -afetivo to -affective, it could allude schizoaffective.

Are humans strictly dimorphic/dimorphous (dimorphs)? Why isn’t there a nuance between monomorphism, homomorphism, heteromorphism, hemimorphism, anisomorphism, automorphism and trimorphism‽

What about renaming it as hemitrimorphic (³⁄₂) or proxdimorphism/diproxmorphism, -prox- meaning proximal/nearly (as in almost), hemi- half/partly.

I know there’s anthropomorphism, what I’m trying to do here is classifying/quantifying/qualifying that.

Gyneflux: a fluctuating Feingender; a fluctuating womanhood/girlhood/galhood.

Counterpart of Androflux.

Etymology

From Ancient Greek, “Gyne” meaning “Female” + “-flux”, an neologistic suffix indicating a fluctuating genderness. Coined by Gent (Gender-Resource), 2021.This term was created to be a Feingender counterpart to the term Androflux, which was coined by user pupyzu in 2021.

Flag

The Gyneflux flag is simply a recoloring of the Androflux flag created by the coiner, user pupyzu at the same time as the coining of the Maingender.
